Inspired by the fractals found in nature, Vine’s metal framework is systematized by the pattern of recursive lines and branching shapes. During the initial stages of design, a linear element experienced different manipulations to produce an algorithm for a pattern that not only expressed functionality in its three-dimensional form but also preserved simplicity.

Maintaining such a pattern helped yield an arrangement of codependent elements that give Vine its durable foundation. However, when proceeding further into the manufacturing phase and applying such an algorithm to a solid round steel extrusion, it was not surprising that we were met with an exciting challenge.

adaptive style

Vine commemorates today’s culture’s accepted definition of “classic” whilst simultaneously providing a visually provoking experience of modernism.

asymmetrical harmony

Its asymmetrical silhouette reveals a sense of movement through the framework’s rotating and repetitive elements that facilitate a compelling urge to move around its perimeter to further appreciate the construction.

Simplexity

Relationship between complexity and simplicity

Despite the seemingly effortless simplicity that the steel framework portrays in its geometry, Vine holds an inconspicuous narrative worthy of admiration. The bends needed to be at specific calculated angles to achieve maximum stability of the structure, but translating that language with precision from conceptual to physical realm required incredible undertaking. Through numerous trials of manipulating steel with small incremental adjustments each trial, we were able to understand how to best produce the desired form and function without losing the initial inspiration from fractals in the process. The valuable insight gained from this experimentation permitted our theory on paper to undergo challenging transformation to become a practical and unique collection.
